Christopher Reeve decided to spend his Memorial Day weekend 1995 competing on his horse, Buck. He says in his book,
Still Me, that he would have preferred going to his summer house in Vermont that weekend, but this was just one of those last minute decisions one often hears about in cases like his. He says that his wife, Dana, even teased him that next Memorial Day weekend, she was going to get to choose what they do.
On Saturday, May 27, just after 3:00 p.m. eastern daylight savings time Christopher's horse refused the third jump, a fence, stopping dead in his tracks. Christopher flew over his horse, coming straight down on the top rail of the jump, landing on his head, breaking his first and second vertebrae.
He says he gradually stopped wondering, "Why me?" and started considering "What life can I build?" The rest of his story is well documented. He not only built a life with his family, he has changed the lives of countless people. The ripple effect of which is going on and on.
