• Re: New to SCI

The staff at the rehab center should be linking him and you up for resources for finding housing, and getting equipment authorized by his insurance and ordered. Is he uninsured? If you have to purchase any of this out of your own pocket, then used is a good option. Check out eBay as well as www.disableddealer.com and the Equipment exchange forum at

  • Re: disabled transport and tours in hawaii

At least Oahu has both accessible buses and adapted vans for rent...not so easy on the other islands. Have not had much problem getting accessible rooms in Honolulu area. Tours can be a challenge. The cruise ships have little or nothing to offer that is accessible at most ports, although we have found one or two excursions in Hilo and on Kauai. ...

  • Re: Double Dosing-What do you think?

It is fine to use those boxes if you can take your own meds, or for the meds that your spouse or other family member gives you, but it would be considered significantly poor practice and unsafe for an RN to administer medications that were poured from their original containers by someone else. The nurse is responsible regardless for checking the ...

How long have you been injured? Did you go to a good rehab center? How old are you? There are few activities that you cannot engage in as far as sports that cannot be done in an adapted way. Sports is a great way to work out and get exercise. Consider getting involved in one or more of the following. Some are team activities, but many you can do on ...

  • Re: Is there any hope for me?!

You are going through a very rough time. While I think it is critical to continue to hope for a cure, it is also important to not continuously compare yourself now to how you were before. You have a lot of potential. You have the use of your hands....I know you may not think that is much, but compared to those with tetraplegia you have a lot. You ...

He can work out on his own. Join a gym, or borrow a friend's free-weights. Swim at the local plunge or YMCA, push miles at the local high school track or around the mall. There are tons of things he can do that don't require formal therapy to maintain his strength, cardiovascular conditioning, and help reduce his pain. He can register for ...

Many if not most physiatrists take Medicaid (Medi-Cal in CA) insurance. Where are you located? You can look for physiatrist at the website posted above and call their offices to see if they take Medi-Cal patients. Of course he needs to apply for Medi-Cal first, and he should be making these calls if he is 21 (and an adult). While Neurontin is ...

  • Re: I'm new. Do any of you experience a 'burning' sensation?

You can find physiatrists (physicians specializing in rehabilitation) in your Yellow Pages listed under ''Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation'' (PM&R) or check this list of board certified physiatrists for your state. The spinal cord medicine board certification is additional, and you would need to ask the physiatrist if they also have ...

  • Re: I'm new. Do any of you experience a 'burning' sensation?

Over 60% of those who have sustained a spinal cord injury suffer from severe neuropathic pain, which many consider more disabling than the SCI. It is often described as ''burning'', ''shooting'', ''electric'' or ''crushing''. It can be at the level of sensation where the injury occurred (radicular pain) or below the level of injury; including ...

Actually most of Marley & Me is a comedy. Only the end is sad. Even Gran Torino had a lot of laughs. Take Doubt off your list though. Pretty grim and intense and not many laughs.

  • Re: Finding a psychologist

A counseling practice is a business like any other and subject to the ADA just like a store or concert hall. Reasonable accomodations are required. This may require the counselor or therapist to either modify their office OR see you in an accessible location. I know you don't want to have to educate them, but this is part of being your own best ...

Just saw a sneak preview of the new film ''Gran Turino'' directed by (and with the lead character played by) a 78 year old Clint Eastwood (who is looking his age). This is most probably his last film as an actor, and he is aiming for an Oscar nomination in the Best Actor category. I am not a big Clint Eastwood fan, but this was an excellent film ...

  • Re: Recent Movies You've Watched

I had a ''movie weekend'' to make up for the films I missed with the holidays. I am a movie freak and rarely see less than 1-2 movies every weekend. I went to see ''Marley & Me''. I am not much of a fan of Owen Wilson, but he was OK in the film, as was Jennifer Aniston. I heard there were 16 different dogs that played Marley. It was an ...

Less so now than when I was younger and my grandparents were still alive, but I try to maintain some of them. My grandfather was Norwegian, which mean the tree did not go up until Christmas Eve, and everyone needed to be home and with family by noon that day (no last minute shopping). The tree stayed up until Epiphany (12th Night). We baked ...

I don't have any simple answers for you, but are you hiring from an agency or private hiring? If hiring from an agency, you need to complain to the agency and ask to have these caregivers admonished and perhaps switched. If private hiring, I am wondering about what is in your contract with each caregiver? You do have a written contract and job ...

I can only repeat what the others have said about life getting better but never the same. It sounds like you need to find a different therapist. It sounds like this behavior is not really related to his SCI, but to him being a rigid and controlling man who does not see a marriage as a loving partnership but as a business relationship. I am puzzled about what you get out of this marriage and why you went into it under these conditions. If he will not go for counseling, you should go

  • Re: what happens when a caregiver's death comes first?

First of all, we never recommend that spouses be the sole caregiver for anyone if at all possible. It difficult for most people to maintain a marriage (esp. any sexual relationship) with such an arrangement, and burn-out is also a definite risk. Many studies have shown that full-time caregivers risk impairment of their health, and cancer can be ...

  • Re: Hyponatremia in Quads?

Yes, unfortunately hyponatremia can be more common in many people with higher SCI (high paraplegia as well as tetraplegia). It sometimes gets worse with aging as well. NaCl tablets may be used, and during an acute episode we will restrict fluid intake as well as use cautious administration of hypertonic saline solutions by IV. If he drinks a lot ...

While actually designed for the geriatric population, and without all of the fancy bells and whistles (no camera, for example) you might want to take a look at the Jitterbug phone: http://www.jitterbug.com/ The large buttons and simple function buttons would make it much easier to use for someone with limited hand function.

I agree. A good place to start is with your children's pediatrician. Your local Mental Health Association may also have a ...

It is very difficult to be both spouse and caregiver. Most people find that one or the other of the roles suffers...and most often it is the spouse role.
