Looking for some help in Texas

My boyfriend was injured back in October 2009 his injury is a T12 complete he was working and out on his own. He had benefits at work but now that he is paralyzed and unable to work his insurance has been cut off and are telling him he needs to get government help and they are no longer providing him any benefits. He is now living with his parents. So he has applied for government assistance but they are denying him because he has savings and stocks he has no income. Does anyone know if they can do this; deny him help because he is planning for his future. Is he considered dependent now that he has moved back in with his parents? Is there help out there for him that will not deny him because he has a savings? We live in Texas has anyone living in Texas gone through anything similar? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Looking for some help in Texas

i was an RN when i got injured...had several different savings accounts & had to spend down all of my money in order to get benefits. i think we're not allowed to have more than $2,000.00. so i bought everything i needed to fit my new life...recumbent tricycle, apple lap top, shower equipt, toilet, and gave the rest of the money to my family.

i had 2 partial powers of attorneys get into my accounts, close them down & spend everything i had in about two days...keeping every single receipt. once i had no money, i qualified for SS Disability & Medicare...which takes two years to receive.

that was my route...i'm just plain ole POOR & don't know what to do for supplemental income.
the great thing is that i do have a chek comin' every month. i did use medicare alot at first, but can't afford the 20%, so i haven't been to MD or therapy for months.

this is my situation...lemme know if there is a better answer.
best wishes & blessings to you,

i will say that my life has change 100% since my injury C4-C5 & i am grateful for the new events that happen in my life everyday.

If he was working, did he have long term disability insurance?  You just need to apply-- insurance may reject at first, but just reapply.  He should also apply for SSDI - it does not matter what assets you have, but you have to be making under a certain amount.  Look for accidental death and dismemberment.  If he's a para, he will automatically qualify; this is not specific to Texas.  Good luck!

Sorry to hear about your boyfriend!
Unfortunately, He will probably have to do a spend down in order to receive assistance from the county or state you live in.
He can apply for SSID. There will be a 6 month waiting period from time of accident. He can not make more than, I think it is $800.00 per month, or they will deduct accordingly. Contact your local SS office & apply. The he needs to spend most of his money to qualify for county assistance. That is how it works for MN.
It depends on how old he is, if he is considered a dependent.
You also nedd to contact your counties "Health & Human Services" Dept. And talk w/ a financial worker, they should be able to tell you what you can "have" in order to qualify for assistance.
    Good luck to You!!!
