    Insurance

I was injured Feb. 2008 in an auto accident and was in hospitals and rehabilitation centers until mid July. In the midst of all of this healing, my insurance and financial concerns I thought were being dealt with by my extended family.  I just recently found out that the health insurance that I had did not cover anything, and that medicaid paid everything. My physical therapist says that is why I have an ancient small hospital bed and an air raft instead of an air mattress. I am angry that this is the reason I do not have certain things that would improve my life. I was working as a traveling nurse and was injured on my way back to my paid for apartment. I was to work the night of the accident, but since the last actual day I worked was the night of Jan. 31, 2008 and I was not able to return to work, my insurance was canceled effective that date. My car insurance paid some bills and I could have had this money to purchase a vehicle so I could be more independent. The major company I was working for said they mailed out cobra papers Feb.6, 2008 and I had two weeks to fill them out and mail them back with payment for insurance to continue. Hello, nobody was there, and where they went who the heck knows! I have written and filed an online complaint with my state insurance department recently without any reply as of now. Does anyone have any suggestions about any further action? I don't want a million dollars, but do think I should have had what the insurance promised. Who would want an insurance that didn't cover you if you were seriously injured?Angry [:@]

    Re: Insurance

Have you consulted an attorney?  Sounds like it's time to at least talk to someone and get them to help you fight your battle.  Why were you not covered by worker's compensation?  I don't know how comp works with traveling nurses.  Personal injury lawyers only get paid if they win your case.  It might at least worth talking to one, but be cautious about who you select.  Ask around  or research them online.  The ones who advertise may not be your best option.  Act soon.  You have two years from the date of your accident to file a lawsuit.  Have you talked with someone at the Paralysis Resource Center (PRC)?  I hope the best for you.  These are just some thoughts.

    Re: Insurance

Hi, I saw your post and thought maybe I could give you a couple pointers. As the other person pointed out first thing I recommend is reaching out the the Paralysis Resource Center. They can point you in the right direction. You can ask them to provide you with contact information to your local advocacy & protection agency near you. Also it always I good idea to save all your explanation of benefits you recieve from your health insurance company even if its Medicaid for anything related to your health care. Esspecially the ones that are denials. That you can present them to a staff member at your local advocacy & protection agency. They will be able to see if you were treated fairly or not and tell you.
    I hope this helps.
