    Dude Looks Like a Lady

Right now I’m starting to wonder which one I am.  I have 2 boys (12 and 14).  My kids and all of their friends call everyone dude.  In the morning it’s “Dude, can you fix me breakfast.”  Translated “Mom can you please fix me some breakfast.”  Middle school is a funny time of life.  I call what they bring home “middle school humor”.  Here is an example.  The other day I am changing the florescent light on my son’s aquarium.  I’ve got the green muck on my hands and everything because I’ve had to take the lid off.  My son says to me “Hey does it smell like up dog in here?”  OK now my mind is spinning its rolodex.  Up dog… is that some sort of aquarium mold, the new fragrance from American Eagle?  So I actually say this out loud “What’s up dog?”  My son replies, “Oh not much mom, what’s up with you.”  I chalk this stuff up to middle school humor.  Anyone else living with this?

As a former middle school boy (way long ago). I can still recall my dude years. When everyone was dude. I clearing remember getting of the phone one night, after talking to my girlfriend and my mom saying, "Did you just call her dude?" And I had. It must be in boys genes. Luckily it passes. And then we just stop talking to you altogether.

I am not sure that everybody grows out of the "dude years" though lol.

I visited with 2 friends last night. Both males in their late 20s.  Nearly every sentence they spoke contained either "dude" or "awesome." Or both. It made me smile because I don't think either of them realized how many times they were using those words.

It makes you wonder if this upcoming generation will actually grow out of it.  I can see them sitting in their boss's office saying... "Dude, what do you mean I'm not getting a raise."  Or as a physician, "Look dude, I'm sorry to tell you that you have cancer."  Geeze, I hope mine grow out of it.  The sooner the better.

Re: Dude Looks Like a Lady

As the mom of a middle school girl I have to say I don't hear the word "dude" instead I get "like." For example: "So I had this assignment in class, like, and the teacher didn't tell us, like, when the project is due." It is reaching the point when I really don't like that word. Wink [;)]

Re: Dude Looks Like a Lady

I was very fond of the word "like" as well when I was in middle school, my mom used to count the amount of times I would use it when talking helped me kick the habit of saying it so much.

With regards to the dude years, the word dude was def. a very popular word on my college campus, I just remember hearing hey dude, whats up dude, later dude, oh duuuude ! and the classic.....dude where's my car Smile [:)]
