Twenty-seven surfers came out to enjoy sunny skies and great waves on Saturday, June 26th in Virginia Beach, VA. Among them was 37 year-old Brendon Cunnginham, a quadriplegic from Bristow, VA, who sustained a spinal cord injury four years ago.
“This event was the highlight of my summer,” said Cunningham. “I never thought I would enjoy surfing again, especially with my limited movement. This gave my kids a chance to see that their dad can still do the unthinkable.”
They Will Surf Again would not have been possible without the support of our phenomenal volunteers. More than 110 individuals supported our surfers at the beach, including some volunteers who made the trip from neighboring states. It was a pleasure to work with local volunteer event coordinators Maury Cooke, Randy Pesich, Jeremy Phelps and Raul Pernites. This terrific quartet even organized a fundraiser the night before the event, raising $2,000 for the TWSA program in Virginia Beach! If you’re in the area, look for adaptive surfers Pernites and Phelps on August 25-29 as they participate in the Life Rolls On Expression Session at the
East Coast Surfing Championships.
Our next They Will Surf Again event will take place in Wrightsville Beach, NC on Saturday, August 7th. If you’re in the area or can make the trip, we’d love to see you. To register, visit:

People always tell me how lucky they feel to have LRO come to visit their city, but truly the pleasure is ours. If you’d like to know more about They Will Surf Again or our other adaptive action sports programs, please check out our website at
