Team Reeve at Superhero weekend

Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Robin AND the Ninja Turtles…it was one heck of a Superhero weekend.

I arrived at Ginty Field in Morristown, NJ just before the crowds for this weekend’s Superhero Half Marathon and Relay on Sunday. And by crowds, I mean over 1,000 runners, who came out on the breathtakingly beautiful May morning to race and support the Reeve Foundation.

I got a quick chance to say hi and thanks to Chris Russo, one of the two amazing organizers of this first time event, just before he flew off in his Superman cape to get things started (the cape later went to the top finisher, Karl O'Reilly of Morristown and will be passed to each year’s top finisher ala the Stanley Cup.)

In yet another case of what we here at the Foundation call "one degree of separation," Chris told us he and co-creator of the Superhero Half, Heather Gardiner, decided to have the race benefit the Reeve Foundation in honor of their friend, Ashley Lauren Fischer (who you’ll note we honored as one of our featured community members at last year’s A Magical Evening gala.)

Chris bumped into our Director of Individual Research Grants program, Doug Landsman at the gym sporting his Team Reeve running shirt (thanks Doug!), told him about their half marathon plan and the rest is history.

My colleagues, Katie, Doug, Maggie, Aimee and I really enjoyed the opportunity to talk to new people about who we at the Reeve Foundation serve, and what we do. We also had a blast trying to see who could recruit the most superheros to Team Reeve.

A huge thanks to them, everyone who came out to run and support, and to Chris & Heather for a truly amazing event! Can’t wait ‘til next year!
