What's new with stem cells?

One of the questions I am very frequently asked when I'm with friends or relatives is, "What's new with stem cells?", or some variant of that question. And I think people usually expect/hope for a nice, short answer - like one or two sentences.

Unfortunately, it's tough to give a short, sweet answer. There are many issues to touch upon when discussing stem cells and one or two sentences just doesn't cut it. I recently read a terrific interview conducted with Larry Goldstein, Ph.D. (photo by John Gibbins / San Diego Union-Tribune), a leading stem cell scientist and author of the new book "Stem Cells for Dummies". Here's the way to answer when somebody says, "Tell me about stem cells..."
