FDA green lights stem cell clinical trial for Lou Gehrig’s disease

NeuralStem, a Rockville, MD biotech, has received FDA approval to proceed with a small phase I safety study of its fetal neural stem cells in patients with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).

This trial, originally placed on hold by the FDA last February, is not intended to show whether or not the transplanted cells protect the motor neurons threatened by the disease, only whether or not they are safe for the patient undergoing treatment.
