Helping children and women in Pakistan

Our Quality of Life grants program knows no boundaries. Donna Valente manages the hundreds of requests we get every year. Recently one of the grantees paid a visit to the home office here in Short Hills, NJ. Asif Kaleem (pictured here with Donna) is the project coordinator for Society for Disabled Women Pakistan whose mission it is "Empowering disabled women and children for Independent Living.”

We have given  two grants to SDW Pakistan. One helped to fund a mobile guidance and counseling program for women who are physically and mentally disabled.  A van was used to bring the program into rural areas for personal counseling of disabled women.

The other provides proper care and treatment to neglected and poor women affected by various paralysis-causing conditions that live in remote rural areas.  The women are extremely vulnerable and marginalized because their disabilities are compounded by the male dominant culture.  And due to the rural and remote landscape, they have little or no access to care.

About gerthro

I lived all my life in and around the Philadelphia area. Went to Temple University, taught television production at Plymouth Whitemarsh high school. In the meantime, I've had lots of jobs in television and multimedia. I left my position as the managing editor of MensHealth.com to come to the Reeve Foundation as the manager of online communications in 2007.
