Facing depression

We just added a section on depression, including links for getting help, to our Resource Center. Part of my unintended theme for the week -- things you don't think about when you see someone in a wheelchair.

From that section: "Depression is found two or three times more often among people who are paralyzed than among the nondisabled – it is common but not normal. Becoming discouraged, grief-stricken or sad is normal, but depression is a health problem unto itself. Most types of depression, however, can be treated."

The hardest part is getting someone to seek help.

Start by recognizing it in yourself or in others. Read up.

About gerthro

I lived all my life in and around the Philadelphia area. Went to Temple University, taught television production at Plymouth Whitemarsh high school. In the meantime, I've had lots of jobs in television and multimedia. I left my position as the managing editor of MensHealth.com to come to the Reeve Foundation as the manager of online communications in 2007.
