    Baby with dry skin

Do/did any of you have a baby with dry skin? My little guy is 3 months old. We have had problems with his skin since day one. We have tried all kinds of baby shampoo and it just irritated his skin. The most recent thing we have used was Aveno baby wash which has been the best. However, his skin is still dry. We tried the aveno baby lotion which is supposed to be the best and very gentle and it broke him out in a red rash. I don't bathe him everyday and I run a humidifier at night to try and help his skin. Anyone have any other suggestions?

    Re: Baby with dry skin

    Hello,

I am not sure if it is the same thing my sister dealt with many years ago. My niece seemed to be alergic to water! Her skin would crack and be very dry after every contact with water... as in a bath. My sister was told by her doctor to stop bathing her with water, and instead to wash her down with a balsam hair conditioner. It sounded really strange, but it worked! She didn't have any of the symptoms and soon outgrew the senitivity to water.

It might not be the same thing, but reminded me of her situation. I hope you find out what the problem is. God bless you all.

    Re: Baby with dry skin

Once you rule out excema you may want to try rubbing your baby down with olive oil.  I know it might sound a little gross but it is the only thing that worked for my DD and it worked wonders!  Her nanny was from Guatemala and that was her tried and true remedy.  It's natural and doesn't contain a lot of the chemicals that can cause more reactions and dryness.

    Re: Baby with dry skin

I used Lubriderm on my oldest.  The second had a red rash on his face, and I didn't want to apply anything artificial that he could accidentally rub into his eyes.  I went to a health food store, and they recommended "The Golden Salve" which is beeswax, olive oil and calendula (marigold).  It worked wonders!

    Re: Baby with dry skin

Can't find the post I wrote about this so I'll try it again, I might have pushed a wrong button in the wrong place.........hmmmmmm......... well, anyway, I used to do respite for a young boy with a skin disorder called ichthiosis or something like that.  The mom never would lotion his skin like the dermatologist at Mayo suggested, but I would put Burt's Bees  lotion on several times a day and his skin problem totally disappeared.                     Hope you find an answer to your little guys problem.

You could also try Coconut oil. You can use it to heal scrapes and what not, it is very lite and soaks in without leaving a heavy oily feeling. I use it on my kid's and I's mosquito bites.

    Re: Baby with dry skin

I would try using soaps and lotions that are unscented.

My cousin's doctor recommends that she use nothing other than Dove soap and Curel lotion on her children.

Our daughter had really dry skin for the first few weeks after she was born and the doctor gave us a special lotion - I cannot remember the name and it is in her diaper bag, which is in her room, and she is napping - I will get the name when she wakes up.  I do believe it was unscented.

    Re: Baby with dry skin

Well we FINALLY found something that does not break out his skin. We tried "baby's herbal garden" by a company called healthy times. I cannot believe how much better his skin is after a week! I got it in the grocery store and said that I would try it and see what happened. I could actually pronounce all the ingredients. The first ingredients were honeysuckle flower extract and aloe vera. I figured it was worth a try. It is a little pricey, but worth it. Thank you all for your help!! It also has coconut oil and the calendula that some of you suggested.

    That is great, CN!

The lotion that our doctor gave us is called "Aquaphor" and it is by "Eucerin."

    Re: Baby with dry skin

I no longer have a "baby" with dry skin, but a 14 year old now!  Immediately after bathtime, put petrolium jelly on the dry patches and then find 100% cotton pj.s.- clothing, etc. to have him sleep in. play in, etc.  I also bathed her in oatmeal baths for the itching and just recently have found "Arbonne" baby products that are all natural, no chemicals for bathtime, as a niece of mine suffers with dry skin as well.  The deramtologist told me not to use soap products....again, the Arbonne is all natural.  Lotions are a no no, because they all contain alcohol to help them dry on your skin.  Ointments are better.  We used Eucerine for moisture as well as the Petrolium Jelly.  The cleanser I used, instead of soap was called Cetaphil or something like that.....and we put a whole house declorinator on as chlorine strips away natural oils as well. We still use these tried and true methods after 14 years.....they do work!
