    Re: The price of gas!

Gas was avg'ing $3.30 a gallon around here. Then I saw on the news that it went up $.20 last night here! What's up with that???

Thankfully I have almost 1/2 tank still and don't have anyplace major to go and no real errands!

    Re: The price of gas!

Actually Jane, they are ristricting the purchase of the 20 lb bags, not the retail size.  I sort of freaked until I heard that.  We eat a lot of rice.

As far as a food shortage?  Maybe, but I think a bit of it may be the sensational journalism.  I really don't trust the news very much.

    Re: The price of gas!

It just went up to close to $3.60/gallon here.
I filled up, thinking I might save a couple dollars - and I did.

Don't have much money here. Husband was out of work so the child support stopped coming. He kept it low so I only get about $600/month for food, gas and medical for a family of three, a dog and two cats.

The economy is so bad, jobs are sparce. I don't have one though he does.

With gas being so expensive, food being so expensive, medical being so expensive.. how can a person raise a family?

Why are oil companies making millions in record profits in the last two years???

    Do I hear... Boycot'?? >:(
    Maybe I heard.. bicycle.

Ever wonder what all this high price of gas and other things is leading too?  How about the "war on terror".  Does anyone really believe that the war on terror can be won?  If you do then you are brainwashed.  Has anyone ever heard of the North American Union?  Click on this to learn more-You all may think I'm nuts but do you remember the first Bush talking about the New World Order?  Believe it.  It's happening right in front of our eyes.

I know some people were totally in a panic over the rice this week and some say they plan to stock up on it.  We don't buy much rice,so we haven't thought much about it.  I do wonder why the shortage, does anyone know what's up with it?

    Re: The price of gas!

Isn't the shortage related to food prices going up because of increased fuel prices...so people are buying more now while the food is cheaper?

Also, I have to wonder how much of it is related to unfounded panic: a few articles in newspapers about food shortages (I read one article in the Wall Street Journal), so people start worrying and buying extra food. Enough of that extra buying, and the system can't keep up with it - rumor fed food shortages - ?

droughts  in some regions of the world which raised the price of rice. In some regions of the world they have been hoarding rice because of the drought conditions which means less to export.

    Re: The price of gas!

Actually it is because there were some floods in India and Thailand (I think) that wiped out their rice crop, so they are not able to export and actually needing to import.

We are currently on a small base in Japan. We have one car, but can walk or bike anywhere on base, and I could realistically use my bike trailer to do my grocery shopping if I went more often. Gas is really high over here. You think it is cheep but it is sold by the liter, and when you average it to a gallon, OUCH!!!

Our plan is that, Lord willing, when we return to the states in a couple more years we will be able to buy a hydrogen car. I've been watching them for a few years now and I saw that they are up to the 4th generation now and looking for people to drive them in the NY area. So that is my hope.

    Re: The price of gas!

I have to say that I'm in favor of gas going up even further.  I still see SUV's with one occupant driving 75MPH+, so gas must not be too much yet.

What do I do?  First, I use either a Shell or BP MasterCard that gives 5% rebates, so at $4/gallon, that's $0.20/gallon off the price.  Second, I drive a car that averages 31MPG in urban driving.  Third, I take public transportation about 50% of the time to work, and try to work from home when possible.

Finally, I drive  a cheap beater car so I don't have a car payment.  I can buy lots of gas since I'm not making a car payment.

Gas is still, even at $4/gallon, the cheapest part of driving compared to the cost of buying most cars.

Not paying interest on a car loan is a great way to save money!

That's pretty much the belief held in my house. On our street we are the only ones with a vehicle that gets over 17 mpg.

When i suggested to my neighbor that he might want to consider riding a bike to work on nice days since his truck only gets 15 mpg. He said i was crazy that he has to drive 4 miles to work, that's too far to ride a bike.

I didn't read the entire post yet, but the real fact of the matter is that Exxon/Mobil has been averaging more than $10 billion in profit per quarter for more than 2 years. That equates to over $110 million in profit per day. This is profit, not total revenue.

Hold on there brother, I drive a little car and hubby drives an suv. No public transportation avail for us to use and we don't work in the county we live in.   So, it's not all cut and dry for people.  I drive the furthest and even with driving a little car all those miles gobble up some gas. I work 2 counties away myself and fill up twice a week.  DH only fills up once a week.  Noone lives near us that we work with to carpool with, so no extra passengers in our vehicles.

Now I am perfectly happy if they only want to raise the gas prices where you live, since you have no problem with it. I support you and gas price increase in your area only.  Just my two cents.

By the way, good to see you spare and hope all is well with you.

High prices for gas, food, housing, utilities, education.........the price we pay for everything is directly tied to the price of oil and the falling dollar.  We are in a recession.  I don't care what the so called economists say we are in it right now.  America is out of credit.  This economy is fueled by credit.  It will only get worse.  Also, these prices we are seeing will be this way until after the election.  All of these economic woes we are going through are planned so the American people will be so outraged that they will vote in a democrat as president.

    Re: The price of gas!

    Hey Pooh!!!  :D

I have to say that I agree with you.

It's easy to say "look at the vehicles with one occupant" - well, that would be me, driving to work on my lonesome every day as I don't have anyone to take with me, because it's a very small business and my co-workers don't start work at the same time as me nor live anywhere near me.  I'm not cycling 30 miles to work and 30 miles home - and no buses go out into the wilderness where I work (on a ranch in the hill country.)  So, please don't pass judgements when you see one person in a vehicle.  I don't drive at 75+ though.  I have learned to slow right down and to coast down hills!!

As for car payments, well, we got into that vicious cycle a few years ago, which wasn't my desire, but oh well.  We recently tried to trade down to get a Scion XB each (my h has a truck, I have a van), but of course our vehicles have hugely depreciated but we still owe a bundle, so buying that much smaller vehicle would have meant us having higher payments *and* it would have cost us the same to insure those vehicles (we checked with our insurer).  Even with the Scion guzzling less gas than our present vehicles, it would not have made up the difference with the higher payments.

So we are stuck.  And we still have to drive.  We can't actually boycott the gas companies because, guess what, I would lose my job and my h would lose his college place, and we would be a whole lot worse off than we are now.
