    Re: Trying to eat RIGHT!

I buy raw beets, Libra, and I wash them, cut off the ends, wrap the beet in foil and bake it at 350 for about 30 minutes.  You can use all kinds of flavorings, if you want to, and I have baked mine with garlic in the past, but I like them just plain best of all.  I think that with pickled beets, you would just have a high acidic content, and maybe there is sugar added, but I don't know.  Look on the label of the jar you buy and see what the ingredients are.  Sometimes, when I look up ingredients I've never had before, I'm absolutely shocked into never buying that product again!  For instance, I was buying those frozen veggies that come in a little bag that you pop in the microwave.  There are some really good varieties BUT I looked at the ingredients one day and you would think 'just veggies' right?  But there are all kinds of chemicals in there to keep the veggies fresh and for all other purposes that didn't sound healthy at all to me.  So I quit buying those and started buying my veggies fresh instead and cooking them myself.

I buy spring mix rather than garden salads, and that's a good way to get a really healthy mix of 'leaves'.  But I usually make my own for lunch, and I mix the spring mix with the other stuff - celery etc - and then just have a drizzle of balsamic dressing.

It's hard, in this town - but maybe it's true of everywhere else - to get healthy food in restaurants.  Everything is soaked in cheese or batter or it's deep fried.  But I always ask for a full-run down on whatever I want to eat - how it is cooked, whether I can have it grilled without batter, whether they can leave the sauce on the side etc.  I also won't order sides that I know I won't eat, I don't care if they come with the meal or not!  I have never been made to feel more guilty than I have by waiters who stare at me and insist that I have three sides, and could I please get on with ordering them, lol.  But I don't want green beans cooked with bacon and grease, thanks, or carrots that are so over-cooked that they disintegrate on my plate.  Yuck.

    Oh well.

Today I have a homemade salad of spring mix, cucumber, celery, sugar snap peas, radish and avocado and I will be eating some teriyaki tuna with that.  Hmm hmm hmm.

I think I am going to check the ingredients more often.  Normally I'm only concerned with calories, sodium & sugar/carbs.  So, I think I will start paying more attention to it.

Oh, and I know you said you stopped getting the veggies to steam in the microwave, but what I wanted to say about that that some might not know is that the microwave actually takes nutrional value out of your food.  So, I have been trying not to nuke anything unless I'm just reheating the left overs.

So far today I've had a half of banana (the other half I put in my son's pb & jelly sandwich at his request!  LOL).  I had some watermelon.  I also had some multigrain Quakes (that I mentioned before).  I made myself a sandwich (only half) that had 1 slice of turkey a half a piece of muenster cheese, onion & green pepper and a little bit light miracle whip and then I grilled it in the skillet (with Pam spray).  I also had some bread & butter pickles that I found with no sugar added and they for some reason don't have any calories.  All of the other brand of this flavor of pickles have sugar which obviously makes for the calories.  And right now I'm snacking on grapes.  For dinner I already know that I'm going out to dinner with my mom and I'll be ordering the steak salad I like at this restaurant.  I might want a snack later and I've been having 10 calorie jello snack packs.  Last night I had strawberry jello and cut up two small strawberries and put two squirts of light Reddiwhip on it.  So yummy and barely any calories!!!  Ok, I just wanted to share some of my snack ideas in case anybody needed any low cal ideas like that.  Oh, and I heard that Valerie Bertinelli like the low cal jello & reddiwhip, so that's where I got that idea from and she's looking pretty great these days after doing the Jenny Craig diet!

    Re: Trying to eat RIGHT!

Well, the last several days I have done very well on my "diet".  I hesitate to even call it that though b/c this is the way I should've been eating all along.  Being a big over eating I'm watching my portions and I'm trying to eat more fruits/veggies.  I have 19 more pounds to lose before vacation.  This might sound silly, but I was thinking of rewarding myself with another tattoo.  People who don't have tattoos may not understand that.  But I want to reward myself for all of my hard work.  Plus, I want another tattoo but don't just want to go and spend the money without a valid reason.  I guess in my head this validates my reason.  Ha ha.  How is everybody else doing?

I heard that by going off of your diet and then back on helps kick start your body into burning fat again if you had recently been at a plateau.  Does anybody know if that is true?  If seems that way so far for me since I had been off last week and back on this week.  But if I do that again I don't want to go as crazy as I did last week.  Just be able to eat a few of my favorites and not feel guilty.  This week I haven't been able to make it to the gym, but have been walking to my son's school to pick him up.  Its not as much exercise as I would like, but atleast it's something.  I may start picking back up on that this weekend or beginning of next week.  As for now, just gonna keep trying to lose by eating right.  Ok, that's like my little journal entry for today.  Just wanted to put some thoughts down here and check back with everybody later.

    Re: Trying to eat RIGHT!

45 mins to 1 hour of cardio

Weights - Light weight - High reps

cut out all white foods....Rice, breads, potatoes.....  High protien, low fat....Fruits low in sugar ...beans, veggies, chicken, fish .....no fried foods and no DRIVE THRU/FAST FOOD

If you eat a sandwhich, whole wheat/grain bread....Try eating an open faced sandwhich (only one slice of bread ) -- Oatmeal is great and so is peanut butter....Keeps you satisfied for a long time.

Eat a piece of dark chocolate every now and then....

    Re: Trying to eat RIGHT!

Well I went and got weighted yesterday and my psychiatrists office and his scale say's I gained 6.4 pounds since last month. Let’s say I’m not very motivated right now, but I know this medication he has me on causes significant weight gain.  But my husband thinks his scale is off because it says my husband gained 20 pounds in the 3 days that he was weighted last.

But I’m still exercising daily and today I’m finding that my flexibility is improving and so is my core strength. Time to take the weekend off and start again on Monday.

Well, the last several days I have done very well on my "diet".  I hesitate to even call it that though b/c this is the way I should've been eating all along.

That's great. I tell my daughter that a diet is what you eat everyday, that when people say they are going on a diet it usually means they are switching from an unhealthy diet to a healthy one.

Just be able to eat a few of my favorites and not feel guilty.

If you deprive yourself of things you like to eat constantly then eventually you will give up. No one likes to feel deprived. The key isn't to not eat what we likem the key is the portion control.

This week I haven't been able to make it to the gym, but have been walking to my son's school to pick him up.
they say all you need is at least 30 minutes a day, it doesn't matter how you get it. I used to walk my daughter to school everyday and by the end of her school year I lost 10 pounds.

    Re: Trying to eat RIGHT!

The way to get off a plateau is to change something up.  It might be your exercise - intensity or length of - or what you eat.  That's why keeping a food diary is a good idea.  You don't have to weigh your food or calculate calories, but even writing a guesstimate like "1 cup of rice" or "small chicken ***" is enough for you to see where your calories/fat intake are at.  I used to weigh my food, which drove me crazy in the end, but at that time I lost over 30lbs, so it worked to a degree.  It just was too stressful to be constantly weighing everything.  I used Fitday then and I still use it now, but now I use cup measures or I guesstimate.  I have a good idea of food portions now, probably because of all that weighing!

It's not silly to reward yourself, Libra.  I have a reward in mind for myself for when I get to my 'fighting-fit' weight, and it's a good thing that it's a while away, because I'm still designing the tattoo!  It will consist of a series of flowers that will "weave" across my back.  I have been collecting flower images for a long time.  So .. as I lose weight, I am keeping that as my focus.

I do believe that a lot of my eating issues are spiritual.  In the past 5 years, through God's grace, I have quit smoking and drinking alcohol.  Overeating is the last remaining stronghold.  I don't mean that it's my last and only sin, ha ha, but it's the last stand-out of rebellion against God's grace.  I hate it when I get on a binge, and I know it's spiritual because it's kind of an "out of body" feeling - which I can't explain.  I just know that when I am present, and in prayer, I say that I won't overeat, but then I get into a stressful situation, or I'm just plain tired, and I can't seem to stop myself heading into the same old pattern.  That's when I need to take myself upstairs, pull out my Bible, and immerse myself in the Word.  That's what I need - not more food, or chocolate, OR ice-cream.

This isn't to say it's wrong to eat chocolate or ice-cream - but it's just a matter of how I eat it, and when I over-eat, it's always extreme and afterwards I'm miserable and guilty.

Do I sound like a complete crank?  Well, I just know how it works for me, and for me (not saying it's for anyone else) it is totally spiritual.

Anyway, today is raw cabbage, avocado, sugar snap peas, cucumber, spring mix with grilled chicken that I cooked at the weekend.  Darn, I forgot the dressing.  Oh well.  Plus, I will have a pita bread pocket (wholegrain) to toast, and then I pull that apart (it is toasted to crispiness) and scoop up my salad with it.  Yum.  Strawberries, blueberries and raspberries for dessert.  :)

Jane, I was so excited to ready your post.  We have a lot of the same ideas when it comes to over eating and our "rewards".  I know exactly what you mean about feeling miserable and guilty afterwards.  My thing is everybody knows I'm trying to eat right and I just want more support from the temptation.  Hubby always pesters me about going on a diet and now I can't keep him on this one.  And like I said before, it's just a healthy way of eating, but he's been eating a bunch of junk and wonders why he feels yucky.  He did say he stopped drinking coffee again and he said that seems to help, but he also needs to start eating the right foods and not over eating.  That's also where I'm puzzled.  I know he needs more calories and bigger portions, but I just get so frustrated when he sits down and has 2 bowls of Special K cereal.  It's not cheap and I feel like if he's going to eat the healthy foods I spend more money on (than the junk foods) then he should eat it appropriately and not waste it.  Am I off base?

As far as the tattoo, I know some people just don't get it.  I've had mine for almost 3 months now and my uncle just made a comment about it the other day.  He called me a degenerate (he was joking in a way).  I told him that he's calling his daughter the same thing too (she has 2 tattoos) and he said he doesn't care.  I know how he views tattoos but I didn't get it for him (I got it for me!)  I've heard people say about what it's going to look like when I'm older and wrinkly or how silly it will be when I'm older, etc.  My opinion on that is...what if I don't get older?  What if I die before I'm old and wrinkly?  You never know when it's your time so why not to something or put something off because of the indefinite future.  But I would like another tattoo so I feel this is a good way to motivate me to keep up with the eating right! (Hey, whatever works, right?)

I don't think I could take the time to weigh my foods.  I guess if you have any tips on eye-balling portion sizes that would be helpful.  But I have been really trying to not eat a lot when I sit down to eat.  I do think it's a good idea to keep a food journal though.  I guess I kind of already do that because I think ahead of time what I want to eat and plan it out.  But I do see the value of writing it down for future reference.

Yesterday: Apple, Special K cereal, celery, strawberries, wheat wrap with grilled (in pam spray) green pepper and onion with chicken and fat free sour cream and a pinch of shredded cheese, and bread and butter chips (no sugar added Mt. Olive Brand - try them!)

Today: Scrambled eggs w/egg beaters and diced red & green peppers and onions and a pinch of shredded cheese and fat free sour cream and salsa.  Going to have sliced strawberries and bananas for morning snack. Probably a salad for lunch and a kiwi for afternoon snack.  Making a chicken for dinner with green beans.  Perhaps of need a snack before bed will have 10 calorie Jello.

I would love to get one, I want a wolf pawprint on my back shoulder, but i'm deathly afraid of needles. Tattos fall under the catagory of love em or hate em.

I guess if you have any tips on eye-balling portion sizes that would be helpful.
I think they say enough that fits on the palm of your hand.

My thing is everybody knows I'm trying to eat right and I just want more support from the temptation.  Hubby always pesters me about going on a diet and now I can't keep him on this one.
It's really hard when people can't support you like you need when your trying to improve your own health. I think that's why it's good that people who are working on the same goal can find each other to get that support that is lacking.

I know that i tend to eat when i'm sitting in front of the tv. I'm trying to retrain my brain to not want food simply because i'm watching tv.

    Re: Trying to eat RIGHT!

    Making Sense of Portion Sizes

Many of us tend to underestimate the amount of food we eat and tend to overestimate the recommended portion sizes for many foods.
For example, try pouring out your usual portion of pasta and measure it! Then, compare it to the label portion size. Chances are, you're eating two, three, four or more times the amount on the label.
Relating the portion size of a serving to everyday items is an easy way to visualize what a true portion size looks like.
    • Woman's fist or baseball - a serving of vegetables or fruit is about the size of your fist
    • A rounded handful - about one half cup cooked or raw veggies or cut fruit, a piece of fruit, or ½ cup of cooked rice or pasta - this is a good measure for a snack serving, such as chips or pretzels
    • Deck of cards - a serving of meat, fish or poultry or the palm of your hand (don't count your fingers!) - for example, one chicken ***, ¼ pound hamburger patty or a medium pork chop
    • Golf ball or large egg - one quarter cup of dried fruit or nuts
    • Tennis ball - about one half cup of ice cream
    • Computer mouse - about the size of a small baked potato
    • Compact disc - about the size of one serving of pancake or small waffle
    • Thumb tip - about one teaspoon of peanut butter
    • Six dice - a serving of cheese
    • Check book - a serving of fish (approximately 3 oz.)
    • Eyeball it! - Take a look at the recommended serving sizes on the new USDA MyPyramid Food Guidance System. Get out a measuring cup or a food scale and practice measuring some of your favorite foods onto a plate, so that you can see how much (or how little!) a ½ cup or 3-ounce serving is. This will help you "eyeball" a reasonable serving!
Libra, I do use my cup measures for some things, like cereal.  I have the "cup" spoons, which are 1/4 cup, 1/3 cup, 1/2 cup and 1 cup.  I scoop my cereal out with the 1/2 cup measure and use it to measure my milk out too, so I'm pretty familiar with that size of measure, and I don't usually measure out my fruit, but do a guesstimate.

Not many people know about my tattoos - my husband and kids, and my side of the family, but my h's family do not, as they are very conservative and I know they would be shocked at the idea of me having tattoos.  I now have 6, but 2 are close together and are kind of combined.  The only time it hurt was the last time, because the guy was in such a rush and he dug that needle in like he was trying to dig for gold.  Ouch.  I won't be going back there.

I don't think you're off base in wanting your husband to stick to the healthy diet all the way.  Perhaps you could point out to him that it's pointless to eat 2 bowls of healthy cereal and then chug down, say, a quarter pounder for lunch!  I can't even get my husband to eat breakfast, although he knows he should.  Yes, junk food will make you feel ill.  That's the basis of You Are What You Eat.  Everyone who goes on that healthy food diet finds that their energy and wellbeing increased in bucketloads.

Your diet sounds just fine - although you might be eating too little if you don't have something else with the chicken and green beans for dinner.  Maybe a little brown rice or wholegrain pasta, or a sweet potato?

It does help to keep that food diary because if you *do* reach a plateau, you can easily reference your food intake for the previous few weeks/months.  Same thing with keeping an exercise diary really.  I like to see my progress, and that's why I have been keeping exercise logs for the past few years.  I have the last 4 or 5 that I used, and I do refer back to what I was doing, and what seemed to work better.  I also confess that I like to see how I have progressed - that I can run further and for longer, and that I can lift heavier weights for more reps, that kind of thing.  It's a good feeling.  :)

Wow, all of that was really helpful.  Thanks!  Well, my day got changed around because I attended a funeral.  So, here's what I had to eat today.  I made myself the scrambled eggs as I said.  For snack I had a half of cup of sliced strawberries and bananas (which I took with me in the car to the funeral.  I found that is very important to take your own water, healthy snacks, etc. to places so you don't get tempted.)  Then for lunch I had one chicken leg (took the skin off ) and green beans at the family's house after the funeral.  I'm sure neither were as healthy as I would've like to eat but I was kinda stuck at eating those things (which were better than the rolls and pasta salad and desserts to chose from!)  I came home and started dinner which was grilled boneless pork chops in a skillet with peppers and onions and a tablespoon of bbq sauce, peas and salad.  I don't think I'm having a snack tonight b/c I'm drinking pop (diet mt dew with cherry flavoring in it).  That will be my sweet tooth for the night.  And I did go for a vigorous walk this evening but only got about 20 mins in because it started to rain.

Funny thing is I find myself thinking about what I'm going to have tomorrow.  Right now it's kind of fun planning for all of that.  And I was making a grocery list tonight too.  Right now I REALLY enjoy eating right and it does give me more energy and make me feel better.  I'm starting to have a better body image too b/c I can tell how my clothes are fitting differently.  It really excites me!

WOW, you have 6 tattoos.  I'm so impressed.  Since you are a tattoo gal, I want to ask you a question.  For my next tattoo I'm planning on getting something small.  And I want it on my arm so I can see it (other tattoo is on my back).  Would you suggest I get it on my inner wrist or my upper arm.  I don't care about pain wise.  I'm just talking about eye appeal.  I want it to see feminine so I don't know if the bicep is the way to go since so many guys have them there.  I also think it would be less noticeable on my inner wrist which is ok with me.  I don't necessarily want it to draw attention.  It's sort of a personal meaning to me, which I don't mind talking about but it's not necessarily for advertising, so to speak, like I see some people do with some of their tattoos.  Maybe it would help if I tell you what I want.  Well, I want to get one of those support ribbons (that you see as magnets on the back of cars).  I want it pretty small and dainty looking.  My ribbon will have two meanings.  One side will be dark blue (prevention of child abuse) and the other side will be light blue and pink (prematurity awareness).  So, if you have any suggestions I'd love to hear.

As for the hubby it really kinda makes me mad how much he eats.  Is that wrong?  Like tonight, he ate two pork chops and a second helping of peas.  I did have left overs so it wasn't a big deal.  But I just feel like he's over eating.  Then tonight he had a bowl of ice cream with everything on it from whipped cream to bananas to m&m's.  Then I was watching a commericial about 45 mins later and saw a commercial with a sundae from Dairy Queen and I said that it looked good and he said he was hungry.  I was baffled!!  I just wish I could get him to want to eat healthy with me.  He's usually the one trying to get me to diet, but he does the atkins diet and I just can't do that one.  It has always been very effective for him though.  But I was hoping we could eat healthy together, and he has agreed to it.  But then he won't do it.  And I have been buying healthy things (hardly any junk food at all) but then he over eats (in my opinion).  Oh well, perhaps its just a test for me to see if I can keep up my motivation and strength.

Do you have any thoughts on salads?  They tend to sound so healthy but I know it's what you put on your salad that counts b/c the lettuce really doesn't have any calories.  A friend told me that the iceburg lettuce has no nutritional value.  How can that be?  It has to be better for you than eating junk anyways.  I don't know if she was just comparing to the other kinds of greens like spinach leaves, and those other dark green leaves that you get in the spring mix type of salads.  I have been trying to mix the darker greens (from the spring mix) in on occasions with my iceburg lettuce even though I used to not like that kind of lettuce.  I always said it looked like someone went out and picked leaves off of a tree outside.  But if it's mixed in with iceburg I can eat it.  And I know it's good for me too!  Just wanted to see what you thought about it.  I also don't put as much cheese and I normally would on my salad.  Just a pinch or two of shredded cheese is good.  And I love pickled beets!!  Yummy!!  Anyway, if you have any thoughts on the famous salad let me know!

Ok, I will check back with you guys tomorrow.  I wonder what I'm going to have for breakfast!  Ha ha!

I don't have any tattoos that show, so I don't know about the bicep or wrist.  I'm uncomfortable with those areas - for me - because it's a bold statement to make.  Why don't you try just drawing the symbol on your bicep and walking around with it that way for a week, and then try it on your wrist for a week?  It doesn't have to be perfect, but when you glance in the mirror, you will see it, and you will have some kind of feeling about it.

I understand about it having meanings.  All of mine have a specific meaning, other than one which was a stupid spur of the moment thing, but that's okay too.  It's not hideous or anything.  My first was a shamrock on my left shoulder which is for my Irish heritage.  It has a version of the eternity symbol inside, and both of these are Christian symbols.  My second was the word "my beloved" in Hebrew which is on my right hip.  That one was quite painful, because it was bold, black words.  Then I got the Kanji symbol for "family" on my back, and I recently got 5 hearts tattooed alongside it - for our family members.  The foolish one was a red rose on my left calf.  But it's okay.  The biggest one I got was a memorial to my mum, and that is a pair of ballet shoes on the left side of my back.  That took almost 2 hours and I was about coming out of the chair by the time he was done.  We have to go back to this guy, Josh, becuase he's very good, and he doesn't have the weirdness factor of many of the staff in tattoo places.  He didn't do the hearts, this really awful, rough guy at another place did those.  I don't mean we went to a bad place, it is very clean and very well known, but that guy almost killed me for putting 5 little hearts (outlines only) on my back, when the 2 hour one was very intricate and several different colors and blendings, and that was just about bearable.  Maybe becuase I was doing it in memory of my mum.  All the way through I thought about her giving birth to me without any drugs, and how hard the labor was, and how the cord was around my neck, and how the midwife saved my life .. so that kept me focused.

Your husband will definitely need to eat more than you, but all the sugar isn't good.  Yikes.  My h is a sugar-hog also.  He doesn't eat chocolate, but he will sit down at night with the cereal container and a pint of milk, and he will eat the cereal straight out of the countainer and drink the milk with it.  Then he tells me that I put too much food on his plate and that I need to cut it back!  I tell him that it's not my food that's the problem - it's the night time snacking that defeats him.  He agrees, but it doesn't stop him doing it again.  It can only be sweet cereal of course - he wouldn't eat a bowl of oatmeal - but he will eat fruit loops by the handful.

This is a comparison I found online between iceberg and romaine lettuce:

    One cup of iceberg lettuce:

    • 8 calories
    • 0.5 gram protein
    • 0.7 gram fiber
    • 10 mg calcium
    • 78 mg potassium
    • 1.5 mg vitamin C
    • 16 mcg folate
    • 13.3 mcg of vitamin K
    • 164 mcg beta carotene
    • 152 mcg of lutein + zeaxanthin
One cup of romaine lettuce has:
    • 8 calories
    • 0.58 gram protein
    • 1 gram fiber
    • 16 mg calcium
    • 116 mg potassium
    • 11.3 mg vitamin C
    • 64 mcg folate
    • 48.2 mcg vitamin K
    • 1637 mcg beta carotene
    • 1087 mcg of lutein + zeaxanthin.

I had "heard" that iceberg lettuce wasn't a great choice, and so I switched to spring mix, which is a mixture of endive, arugula, lamb's lettuce, raddicchio, chervil, spinach etc.  Some of this isn't the greatest taste, but I use a little - only a little - salad dressing and I dip the spring mix into it, and that helps!  That's why I think it's perfectly okay for you to add iceberg lettuce in, because it's not actually going to harm you, is it?  As you can see, it does have some benefits, I think that maybe your friend meant that it's not as beneficial as other 'leaves'.  Whatever helps, I say!  Be it dressing or a bit of iceberg mixed in!  Just change it up so it doesn't get boring - and experiment.  I find that adding a sprinkling of sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds also helps, to get a crunchy feel, but they are very high in fat so they would need to be added instead of cheese, rather than as well as cheese, if you wanted to do that.

You did really well to take your own snack with you yesterday.  I agree that it can be really hard to find your ideal food when you are going to an event.  I got home last night and my MIL (my ILs are visiting) had made dinner, which was great, but dinner was croissants and cheese and olives .. I was like "oh my gosh" because that is just fat, fat and more fat!  So, I tried to limit the damage by not eating any olives, and only a little cheese.  Arrrggghhhhh.

    Re: Trying to eat RIGHT!

I too have been trying since the first of the year.  Ten pounds off in 4 months.  That is not a lot, but it has stayed off (even through my large Easter meal followed by a lot of candy) and it is 1/3 of my goal.  I make one really healthy choice each day and do a half hour of exercise every other day.  I know it doesn't sound like much but I have found what I can stick to.

    Re: Trying to eat RIGHT!

Well, I think I did pretty good yesterday.  I had yogurt and a kiwi in the morning.  Wasn't home for a morning snack but I had a great lunch.  I made a wrap in a leaf of head lettuce with some shaved chicken, light miracle whip, low fat shredded cheddar and green pepper and onion.  I also had pickles and cheddar cheese quakes with it.  For dinner I made a salad before I went out with a few friends so I wouldn't be starving and want to eat a bunch of junk.  When we went out I ordered buffalo chicken (but it was was fried), but I only ate half of it and brought the rest home.  I blew my calories though with quite a few martinis.  But I had a great time!!  I did go walking yesterday for 40 minutes with leg weights on.  So, hopefully that evened everything out!

Not sure about today yet.  I'm not awake enough yet to figure it out.  But you know, I felt great going out with some girls and dancing.  Because of the weight I've already lost I was much more confident about my body image.  Oh, and wait, dancing is exercise too!!  So, hopefully I did
