Ugh, I had pizza yesterday!  Been walking a LOT lately and have a little blister on my pinky toe.  Gonna probably skip the walk today b/c it hurts.  How's everybody else doing?

    Re: Trying to eat RIGHT!

    Doing good, Libra.

Remember to change it up.  Walking every day can cause worse things than blisters!  Try a bit of variation to spice it up.  :)

I would know all about injuries!!  Ack.  A few months ago I was supposed to take part in the Race for Life, so I was running every other day because I wanted to get around the course in a decent time.  At the same time, I was doing a lot of stretching, because y'know, I am 47 in a few months, and stretching really helps to keep me more limber.  Anyway, long story short, I wound up with this really horrendous groin pain.  I could run, but I couldn't walk, lol.  I mean, it was intense.  So, I saw the doctor and she was convinced I had a hernia, so I had to wait about 3 weeks to get a CAT scan, but then I finally found out I was okay - but that was too late for me to do the Race for Life, and I was 3 weeks down on my workouts, because she said to do nothing weight-bearing until I knew for sure, because of the dangers of the hernia (the hernia I didn't have!) becoming strangulated.  So, it was just a torn muscle, and it did heal, and I'm a lot more careful now with those groin stretches!!

But now I have plantar fasciitis to contend with.  Grrrrrrrrr.  I had surgery on my toes when I was 21 because I had hammer toes, but after what they did to me, I sincerely believe that I should have left them alone and I would have been much better off.  So, because of that surgery, my arches fell completely, so I really over-pronate badly and I have really flat feet, and all of that causes knee problems and hip problems.  *sigh*  The issue with plantar fasciitis flared up about 2 weeks ago, and now I can't really run much at all.  :(

So, I have been following all the advice for this condition and that includes shoe inserts, and foot stretches and exercises etc.

    Bah.

Hi Libra: and thanks for the great thread.

I've become a real "fatty" lately amongst many marital turmoils, so I too, am trying to lose several pounds and eat right.

I have discovered a very good book, called The Paris Diet.  I'm following it as of the past week.  It's basically a high protein balanced diet, but it does contain some really nice recipies by known Parisian chefs blending not only taste but low in fat as well.  You or anyone may want to check it out.  I really like it so far.  Don't know if I've lost any weight on it yet in a week, but my skin does look radiant, as I've eaten fish now every day for a week.

    Re: Trying to eat RIGHT!

Jane:  I suffered also with "plantar fascitius" for a long time recently, but mysteriously it disappeared.  I did pay more attention to the shoes I bought and wore, and opted to shop at those "comfort shoe places", buying some Soft Soles, Mephistos, etc.  Maybe it made a difference? Don't really know for sure, but I do know this condition is so painful.  I feel for you. Try to get pedicures once a month if you can, and opt for shoes with a really padded footbed.

    Good Luck Jane

    Re: Trying to eat RIGHT!

Yes, I have looked up lots of info about the condition - thank the good Lord for the internet - and have learned to:
    • stretch my foot before I even get up
    • never walk around barefoot
    • find supportive soles
    • try to stay off my feet
The staying off my feet part is the hard one.  I can't work out sitting on my behind.

    Re: Trying to eat RIGHT!

    A great diet dressing:

    Non-fat plain yogurt
    dijon mustard
lemon/or lime juice--mix all to taste.......you can add some shallots/garlic

This is yummy, and low in calories and so much better than store-bought salad dressings, like Ranch which my family loves, but look at the label??? Also buy the herb salad mix, it's much better for you than simple lettuce.  Buy it in the plastic containers, it lasts longer too.

    Re: Trying to eat RIGHT!

I just came upon this post since I was bored and wanted to see what some of you had to say.  I'm on summer vacation from school now and am enjoying the break from the kids.

Reason why I'm writing is that you seem to be doing so well. I needed that boost to get going.  Twice I have lost 20 lb. and excercised every day and I felt GREAT!  Now since I was sick last winter, I stopped exercise, went back to my old way of eating and put back on 15 pounds.  I feel so badly.  ANyway, could you pray for me to get back into the routine of eating right and exercising?  I did Gilad today (FIT TV) and it is my beginning.  I have blown it eating so many bars I made for my H birthday.  That was before I read this post.  I am ready to start again.  I am jealous of you ladies for doing so well, but I will try again starting right now!

    Re: Trying to eat RIGHT!

    Praying right now, hmp.

I hit a slump.  Bah.  It's the whole thing with my feet.  I'm so fed up that I can't run, because I really like to run.  Now I'm reduced to the stationery bike and weights.  It doesn't feel like enough.  So, what do I do when I'm fed up - I eat.

So, I need to turn myself around, and I need more God and less food!

Does anyone know anything about Weigh Down?  I have seen people mention it in the past but can't remember whether it was positive or negative.  The website shows a workshop that can be done at home with videos and audio cassettes - but it's expensive.

I just know that I'm tired of my thought processes when it comes to food!

    Re: Trying to eat RIGHT!

I've had the same thing wrong with my foot too in the past (saw a podiatrist about 10 yrs ago).
I had the same thing happen that softie did. It "disappeared" after a while. Mine took at the very least, about 9 months. Still to this day, I don't believe it's healed all the way, but I'm definitely not having problems with it. Mine was swollen 3 times the normal amount it should've been (I believe due to having 3 kids so closely and carrying that weight consequtively for so long).
Hopefully just babying it for a while will help you get back on track with the activities you enjoy.

    Re: Trying to eat RIGHT!

Thank you OM.  I can only hope it just 'goes away'.  I did see a podiatrist yesterday, a private one via referral from Tricare, but he was neither use nor ornament!  We didn't even have a proper conversation where I got to tell him the whole story.  I started off telling him how I had been running and the pain was here and then .. and he just cut me off and asked me what the best scenario was for me.  Like, oh don't even bother telling me your problems for goodness sake, just cut to the chase.  Gee, nice bedside manner, dude.

Bottom line is, I spent $65 on a Strasburg Sock, and I have a prescription for the brace shop for orthopedic inserts.  He can't do anything for my toes, other than surgery, and no-one is putting those pins in my toes again, no siree. He wrote down all these steps I could take (ha ha, how droll), including how I can buy Birkenstocks (yeah, can you give me a prescription for those too?) and that was basically that.  $12.00 copay please, ca-***!!

    Waste. of. time.   *sigh*

Did you ever have the steroid shot, OM?  My family practice doctor said that it might help, but this dr. didn't suggest it.  I know it would be painful, but my left foot is so painful right now, I think I would take a shot, even though I totally hate needles.

I have my suspicions that God wants me to slow down.  Slow down, stop using running as a way to combat over-eating perhaps.  Instead of eating like a pig and then running for an hour to cut the calories down, perhaps more gentle exercise and some self-control with food!

    Godly self-control, that's what I'm missing.

    Re: Trying to eat RIGHT!

I didn't get a shot of steroids because I didn't follow up with him after my second visit. I remember my plantar tissue being swollen around 9 mm or cm's (forget the normal measurement), it was obvious at the time on the sole of my foot and probably could've benefitted from the shot. No, he took an ultrasound and did some other xrays, hairline fracture in the bone and offered to fit me for an ortho insert which at the time we couldn't afford (10 yrs ago). A family member offered to pay but I didn't want to bother with it. I took the Motrin the military docs gave me to help until I saw the pod dr, to keep swelling down, paid attention to the shoes I wore (I've been a sandal/bare foot person my whole life), soaked my foot, massaged my foot alot, and wore supportive socks or wraps alot. It used to be so bad, I'd hobble in the morning upon getting out of bed and walk on the pad of my foot because I couldn't put my whole foot down.
It did eventually heal, but even now, I can feel where the crack in the bone was/ligament damage, but it doesn't hurt anymore and hasn't for a very long time.
I hope you're able to pamper that foot with the same results too. Just take care of it as much you can and see if it will heal a bit on it's own.

    Re: Trying to eat RIGHT!

Thank you so much for the prayers Jane,  I know the Lord is giving  me tons of grace and strength which I haven't experienced in a long time dieting.  Each time at school I would try to begin my diet  it would last a day until someone brought goodies ( and there were always amazing ones, usually a table-full).  That was the end of my diet!

It really helps with school out and time to work around the house.  I've been counting calories each day and of course that means healthy eating since calories are less in fruits and veggies.  I've had lots of raw cabbage with tuna and that spritzer dressing..  I've been making banana smoothies with a banana, frozen strawberries and skim milk.  I always have steel cut oats for breakfast.  Anyway, the Lord has allowed me to lose 5 lb since I asked you to pray.  So thanks!

I am sorry about your foot!  I just called my husband who has been a cross country coach for years and has seen many kinds of foot and leg problems, but he said he would have to do internet research just as you have done, so sorry I couldn't share anything helpful.  I will be praying for you.

I have a different problem.  I'm 61 and have horrible arth. in my knees, ankles and feet.  I have a dr. appt. in a week because they are so bad I can hardly hobble around anymore.  I do weights with a videos I have (Joyce Vedral) and stationary bike which doesn't seem to bother my knees at all.  I can't walk or jog anymore so my running days are over.  I'm happy you are able to still be a runner even though you are out of commission for awhile.  I pray the Lord will heal you soon and in the mean time a verse is in my mind which also is a song my children used to sing, "IN everything give thanks, for this is the will of God".  I'm sure it's tough now to stick to your dieting but I'll pray for you with that alson.

    Re: Trying to eat RIGHT!

Hey guys!  I haven't been on in FOREVER!  Anyway, how has everyone's progress been?  Well, I have to be honest, my eating habits the last couple of weeks have been HORRIBLE!  BUT.... since I've been trying to watch what I eat I have lost 2 sizes and approximately 25 pounds (perhaps more but I didn't start counting right away).  So, I'm extremely happy about that and wearing my new jeans, and skorts and capris with pride!!  Overall I'm feeling a lot better about myself.  I would like to get back to work this week on eating better and doing more exercise.  Last week I kinda slacked on both but even when I wasn't eating the best I was still working out the week or so before that.  I think I just hit a plateau and got discouraged and then we had 3 birthdays in 1 week, so it got hard.  But I will be on vacation in 2 weeks so I think a little extra hard work will help me to feel rejuvenated and refreshed for that vacation.  I was even thinking about doing some walking on the beach while I'm there for my exercise.  That should be easy enough!!  Anyway, hope you all are doing great!!  I missed ya!

Hey there softiegirl, I don't do fish, so if that's the bulk of that diet, I think I'll have to pass.  For me it's really all about watching calories.  Which I haven't done a great job of lately as I said in my previous post.  But gonna get back to it.  Hopefully I've had just enough of a "break" in eating "right" that my metabolism will have a jump start again when I go back to eating "right".  LOL  I'd like to lose another pant size by the end of summer.  I don't think that's too far fetched, is it?  It would be great to lose 2...but I'll set my sights on 1.
