    Family Vacations

With summer looming, I am wondering what families plans are for vacationing?

With gas prices so high in our state...we are keeping it pretty close to home this year.

My dh will be taking classes on the South Coast for a week in July and we are all packing up and going with him...

And my son has a weekend tournament on the North Coast in June so we plan on going over there and mixing camping up with watching him play.

How about anyone else?  Got any fun destination places set in your sites?

Ok, well I must confess that I am having MAJOR Pooh envy right now! ;)  I LOVE DISNEY!  We spent five days in the Land this February and it was soooo hard to come home!  I am still suffering from what can only be called The After Disney Vacation Blues.

Instead of taking meds for my "what do you mean I can't LIVE at Disneyland depression", I made myself a new Mickey and Friends mouse pad that says Disney Dreamin' on it...toooo cute!..and I am waiting impatiently for my new Mickey and Minnie vinyl car sticker for my back window. Yeeee!

I hope you have the most magical time ever, Pooh!  Are you going to the Land or the World? Also, can I come too...I promise that I won't eat much, wont talk at all and I am pretty sure you can just squeeze me into your over night bag! Ü

    Re: Family Vacations

We are driving down to the Shenandoah Valley area and staying for a week. We're staying in three different locations, the last being an air-conditioned camping cabin complete with kitchen, bathroom, tv and a fully-stocked lake!

A friend may come to visit from out-of-state and if she does we'll do day trips to some of our area's sites!

    Re: Family Vacations

We've talked about doing the tourist in your own town thing. I mean - how many people pay to fly across the country and do a harbor cruise in (say) Baltimore? Why not do a harbor cruise in your own town - with the out of town tourists - instead? I think too many people have never done the tourist things in their own area because they've been too busy going to out of town tourist places.

We've got Snoqualmie Falls near here - gorgeous, and real popular. We also might explore some of the bike trails - the Rails to Trails conversion has been really successful. We have hundreds of miles of bike trails in our county. Hoomi and a few others have talked about the fun of tandem bikes, especially recumbents. My dh and I are still thinking about trying one of those.

On a practical level, we have been less inclined to travel during the summer because that's when everyone else does it (crowds and increased prices). We don't have school schedules to think about, so that gives us some flexibility. Also, summer is just an incredibly busy - and fun - time for us, working on our property.

"More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord...that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection..." (Phil 3:8,10)

    Re: Family Vacations

I'm seriously considering going to Florida over the summer. I've been invited to Boca Raton with my oldest, but can't really take all the kids and there's another friend I'd like to visit in another area further north in Florida.
What stinks is that baseball is taking up our entire summer, to include a tournament over the Fourth of July weekend.
I actually feel like camping again this summer, even if I only do a mommy's weekend away with another friend of mine.
Assateague is our usual standby, at least once every summer.

I'd love to take off an visit California for a week with at least one kid with me, as long as the $99 specials from Southwest are still going on.

Me, wife, and 4 kids are driving to Texas and sleeping on various couches and floors at family members. Though I word it that way, I have a wonderful set of inlaws, bro's sis's, Mother and Father in law...awesome folks. After the visit it takes a week of advil to sort out my back from the sleeping.....but they are in their mid 70's and we want to visit every chance we get.

    Re: Family Vacations

We are taking a 2 week cruise/tour in Alaska very soon!  This is not the “norm” for us, but my DH’s parents are taking all of their “kids” and spouses.  This is something we never dreamed we could do and we feel so blessed to be able to go.  We are leaving behind our daughter that is just graduating from high school (tonight!), so we hope to do something with her in July….maybe a long weekend trip to TN in the mountains.  We have a place to stay for free there, but we are still not sure becuase of the gas prices. We live in Florida and we want OUT of Florida in the summer!  I could never think of doing Disney in the summer…too hot for me!

I couldnt agree more on the heat avoidance. Living in Texas for 18 years, but being an Ohio guy, it got overwhelming. But regarding in state vacations, we were homeschooling one year, and money was tight, so we went from Houston only to San Antonio for a few days. I had some free hotel rooms accumulated and while we'd been many times to the Sea World and Fiesta Texas amusement parks, it had been awhile.

Well it was late August, school had started so no one was there...I mean EMPTY (benefits of homeschooling!) and we rode all the biggest attractions literally over abd over, get off, walk around to the entrance  and get back on.....must have ridden some things more then 10-15 times. THAT was very nice. But all three days the sky was clear, pure blue, balzing sun, and temperature exactly 100 every day. It was so hot we were pouring water we had gotten from drinking fountains and put into water bottles, pouring it right over our heads and cloths so as not to drop over.

I imagine Disney will be , while not 100, WAY too hot for my liking...although if I lived nearby I'd go for sure. I wonder if, after school starts, but right at the beginning when its still blazing hot, if there are days like that at Disney where noone is in line.

    Hope & DIC.......smileys

You both are blowing heat on my parade.  Actually, the heat is one of my concerns about going to Disney in July.  We go to Disney for the weekend atleast 2-3  times every year and always for my birthday.  We love Disney but not so much when it is burning blazing hot outside.  We actually spent 3 days at Disney last July and it was blazing hot.  I had sweat rolling down my face at 9:00 am in the morning  last July.

However, considering we went on a cruise in early part of the year and gas prices we thought about staying in state this time.  Hubby kind of hinted at going to see our dearest friends instead in TN just the other day, but I don't know.  We would still need to get a hotel most likely considering they are a family of 8 it is a bit tight because their place is small.   We could get our money back for Disney still but the price of gas.....yikes.

    Re: Family Vacations

Pooh, we haven’t been to Disney in about 15 years!   Have you ever considered doing a beach vacation near where you live?  I know it’s still hot, but at least you are away from home and you can just enjoy the water and stay cool.  I’ve never done it, but I know several that have.  Seems like we never enjoy what we have in our own backyard what many travel many miles to get to.  We’ve also talked about doing some local day trips to areas we’ve never been to.
